European Media Studies Bachelors and Masters Course Description

The European Media Studies course is a co-operative project between the University of Potsdam (Arts and Media Department)and the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam(Design Department). The students of the European Media Studies (EMW) are matriculated at the University of Potsdam.

The course provides a variety of skills relating to European media, markets and arts in terms of culture, media and law. By bringing together aesthetics, theory and cultural history with technical media skills and media production, and through the close co-operation of two different higher education institutions, the course focuses on the future and the new realities of the world of work and life. For this reason it is not only various academic disciplines that are involved – and this is the unusual thing about this course – but also various knowledge and learning cultures, as is expressed by a high level of project work.
The emphasis of the content of the course is on the connection between theory, aesthetics and practice in the media, giving a European perspective in cultural historical context. The concept of the media is understood very broadly and includes all kinds of media technology and practices, from ritual to dance, from writing to pictures, from photography, film and modern communication methods to networks, artistic performances and interactive non-linear media. Particular attention is paid to the development of concepts and designs for digital media projects as well as aesthetic projects, genre and format analyses and media production forms. Other fields include media economics, media management and media law; all taught with the aim of giving students comprehensive vocational training in the media.
The European Media Studies course consists of a three-year Bachelor’s degree and a two-year Master’s degree. At the end of the course, the qualifications of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts are awarded. The course can be started at the beginning of each winter semester. Only a limited number of students can be accepted.
